Athletes Gathered to San Diego from Across Southern California

San Diego- It was not just an average weekend for Aaron Jacobs or about 40 other Special Olympic tennis players. The field of athletes competed for honor, ribbons and Olympic gold, silver or bronze. Jacobs, an 18-year-old who attends Patrick Henry High School in San Diego, rose to the occasion and proudly earned the Gold Medal in the Division III Singles. His outstanding baseline game was first-rate among fellow competitors.

Ronney, a teaching Pro from San Diego, worked with National Special Olympics event coordinator Craig Pippert and North San Diego County representative Dino Lagui. The trio organized 8 divisions of singles, doubles and two groups of skills competition. The first round started at 11am and the tournament was completed by 4 pm.

The event was a smashing success also due to the aid of over two dozen volunteers, who helped the athletes keep score, call lines and understand the competitive format. Others who contributed were family members of the athletes, including parent Kirby Sands, whose daughter won Gold in the Division I Singles draw.

Check out the Special Olympics photo gallery on that page of this Web Site. This event was truly an inspiration to all, and it exemplified the meaning of sportsmanship in athletics.

Volunteers came out to support this awesome event.
